How to Add a Liability Waiver to Shopify (No Shopify Plus Needed)

By MerchantKits · October 9, 2026 · 5 min read

If you sell anything with an element of risk — equipment rentals, classes, tours, events, fitness sessions, pet care or adventure gear — a liability waiver on Shopify is one of the simplest ways to protect your business. The problem: Shopify has no built-in way to make customers sign one. This guide shows you how to collect a signed waiver for every order, on any Shopify plan, without touching your checkout.

Who needs a waiver on Shopify

A waiver (also called a release of liability) is a document in which the customer confirms they understand the risks of an activity and agree not to hold you responsible for injuries or damage within the limits the law allows. Shopify merchants commonly use them for:

  • Rentals — bikes, kayaks, camping gear, party equipment, tools.
  • Classes and experiences — fitness, climbing, dance, cooking, workshops.
  • Events and tours — races, retreats, guided trips.
  • Services — pet sitting and boarding, beauty treatments, tattoos and piercings.
  • Products with a risk — e-bikes, supplements, firearms accessories, DIY kits.

In each case you want the same three things: the customer's signature, proof of when and what they signed, and a copy you can find quickly if something goes wrong.

Why you can't just add it to checkout

The obvious idea is to add a "sign the waiver" step to the Shopify checkout. On most plans, that isn't possible: deep changes to Shopify's checkout pages are limited to Shopify Plus, which costs far more than most small stores need. Merchants asking this question in the Shopify Community are regularly told the same thing.

A checkbox that says "I agree to the waiver" is better than nothing, but it's weak evidence: there's no signature, no record of the exact document the customer agreed to, and nothing tying the agreement to a specific person.

Three ways to collect waivers on Shopify

ApproachHow it worksGood forWatch out for
Manual emailYou email each customer a PDF and ask them to sign and send it back.A handful of orders a month.Time-consuming, easy to forget, scanned signatures are weak proof.
Sign before buyingAn app shows the waiver on the product page or cart and the customer signs before they can buy. When you must have a signature before payment.Adds a step before purchase, which can cost you sales.
Sign after orderingAn app emails the customer a signing link automatically as soon as the order arrives. Most rentals, bookings and services — checkout stays fast. You need a simple rule, e.g. "the booking is confirmed once the waiver is signed".

SignShield uses the third approach. Because it works after the order, it doesn't need checkout changes — so it works on Basic, Shopify, Advanced and Plus alike. If you need a signature before payment instead, see our comparison of Shopify e-signature and waiver apps.

Step by step: add a liability waiver with SignShield

  1. Install SignShield from the Shopify App Store and start the 7-day free trial.
  2. Create your waiver. On the Templates page, choose the ready-made Liability Waiver template — it already contains sections on assumption of risk, release of liability and indemnification — and edit the wording to fit your business. You can also upload your own PDF instead.
  3. Place the fields. Add a signature field plus anything else you need: printed name, date, emergency contact, or a checkbox for a photo release.
  4. Link your products. Choose which products need a waiver — for example only your rental and class products. SignShield only sends the waiver for orders that contain a linked product.
  5. Choose when it's sent. Send automatically when the order is created, when it's paid, or manually from the order when you're ready.
  6. Activate and place a test order. You'll receive the signing email exactly as your customer will.

From then on, every matching order triggers an email with a secure signing link. The customer signs on their phone or computer — no account needed — and you get the signed PDF with a Certificate of Completion. The signed waiver also appears in SignShield's Signing Sessions page with its full audit trail.

What a good waiver includes

Every business is different, but most liability waivers cover:

  • Description of the activity and its known risks, in plain language.
  • Assumption of risk — the customer confirms they understand and accept those risks.
  • Release of liability — the customer agrees not to bring claims for ordinary negligence, to the extent local law allows.
  • Health and fitness confirmation, where relevant.
  • Minors — a parent or guardian signs on their behalf.
  • Optional consents — photo/video use, emergency medical treatment.
  • Signature, printed name and date.
Proof matters as much as wording. Each document signed with SignShield records the signer's name, email, IP address and time, is sealed with a SHA-256 fingerprint and a trusted timestamp from an independent authority, and can be checked by anyone on a public verification page. If a customer later says "I never signed that", you can show exactly what they signed and when. Read more in Are electronic signatures legally binding?

Tips for getting every waiver signed

  • Say it on the product page. "You'll receive a short waiver by email after booking — it takes 30 seconds to sign on your phone."
  • Make it a condition. Add a line to your policies: the rental or booking is confirmed once the waiver is signed.
  • Check before the date. The Signing Sessions page shows who has opened and who has signed, so you can follow up before the customer arrives.
  • Keep the language simple. Short, clear waivers get signed faster — and are easier to rely on later.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Shopify Plus to add a waiver to my store?

No. Changing the checkout itself is limited to Shopify Plus, but an app like SignShield sends the waiver by email right after the order, so it works on every Shopify plan.

Is a waiver signed online legally binding?

In most countries, including the US (ESIGN Act and UETA) and the EU (eIDAS), an electronic signature is as valid as a handwritten one. Whether a particular waiver protects you depends on its wording and local law, so have a lawyer review it for high-risk activities.

Can customers sign the waiver on their phone?

Yes. The signing page works on any phone, tablet or computer. Customers can draw their signature with a finger or type it, and they don't need to create an account.

Can I require the waiver to be signed before the customer pays?

SignShield sends the waiver right after the order, which keeps checkout fast. If you must have a signature before payment, a pre-cart signing app is the better fit — see our comparison of Shopify waiver apps.

How much does it cost?

SignShield costs $9.99 per month after a 7-day free trial and includes 50 signing requests per month, with unlimited templates.

This article is general information, not legal advice. Laws on electronic signatures and waivers vary by country and state — for high-risk activities, have a lawyer review your document.
